The voice as the first instrument — voice cultivation in the Paluskar tradition
Before ragas and compositions, the Paluskar tradition trains the instrument every one of us carries — the voice itself.
“Your VOICE matters.” In our tradition these are not motivational words — they are a pedagogical principle. Pandit V. D. Paluskar proved over a century ago that the voice can be trained systematically, like any instrument, and that musicality is not a birthright of the few.
Science and sensibility
My guru, Pt. Rajendra Manerikar, whom I call a voice scientist, refined this into a complete applied syllabus: breath support, resonance placement, steadiness of pitch, registers of the voice, and stamina — each cultivated through precise exercises before the first raga is ever sung.
For everyone
The results surprise people. Timid students find the courage to sing authentically; trained musicians rediscover joy through new vocal approaches; teachers and speakers learn to speak for hours without strain. Sound, practised correctly, is also health — a field I continue to research.
How to begin
Sit with a tanpura drone. Find your sa. Hold it — steady, unforced, listening. That single held note, repeated daily with honest attention, is the whole method in miniature.
